Be Unique

Rita has a perfectly clear picture of the kind of person she wants to become. She does not want to be herself. She’s made this pretty clear by this point. And this is the main reason why she did not go to Frank’s dinner. She realised she has not actually changed yet, and thought she was not going to fit in with Frank’s friends. Rita peered through his window and saw the group talking seriously, confidently, wittily… Through that window she could take a brief look at all she has always wanted to be, and this vision had two effects on her. First, she freaked out and rushed to the pub where Denny and her mother were singing. But then, she plucked up courage and took this image she had seen at Frank’s as an ultimate goal to achieve, so she decided to start all over again. The sad aspect of this decision is that she wants to change everything about herself, ignoring her incredible uniqueness. She needs to be just like the rest of people, losing in that wish her precious identity.

Hi Lu,

I also think that Rita freaked out when she knew that there was a long way from being one of those people who she wanted to become but then she encouraged herself to go on her goal.I understand her because the same happens to me when I realize that I'm in the midde of my career. What I don't share with Rita is the fact that she wants to change everything about herself. I think that she doesn't need to loose her identity to understand everything which was the reason for beginning a course in literature, don't you think so?

Lili

Hi LuLuLuLuLu...

I like your post very much.
I think Rita doesn't belong to any of these two words (family & Frank's word) anymore because she already started to change. That is why she finds very difficult to fit at the party and even at the pub.

Anyway, She has very clear in mind that she wants to go on with her change!

See you...

Pame =)

Hello Li, I agee with you in that Rita does not have to change everything about herself to become a "better" person.
As regards your situation Li, do you really think or need to rush your course of studies? isn´t it better to enjoy the fact that there is a way ahead to go along? I believe that, as with Rita, if we don´t have goals in life we would not have anything to live for. so, isn´t it much better to take pleasure in achieving thing little by little?

hugs,
Lu

Hi Pame!
I was thinking of what you´ve said about Rita's world. I believe you're right in the sense that she has already started a process of change, and that she knows perfectly what she wants.
xxx,

thanks for posting!
Lu

Hello Lu,

I totally agree with you in that when one has a goal and tries to achieve it, one should not rush. As far as I'm concerned, I don't like to go fast with my studies because I couldn't understand well and so I couldn't enjoy it.
Hugs,
Lili

Great discussion here, ladies! Kudos to the 3 of you!

I'd like to take you 3 a bit further on the issue of Rita's "not belonging to either world" (as Pame has put it). I agree with you that this is the case at this stage of the play... Yet, since we've studied all human beings need to belong to some community for a healthy life to be possible, this "alienation" sounds scary.

Should Frank (as Rita's teacher)somehow away to avoid it, or at least ameliorate its effects? Is it OK for school to encourage students to join "the academic community" when this means breaking up with their background culture?

Big questions, I know, but I'm confident you 3 will take them up with courage! :-*

Warmly,
Gladys

Hi!
Well, taking into account what we´ve been discussing in class, I don´t think it´s a good idea to FORCE students to take part in a community different which is in conflict with their own cultural background.
I think what teachers should do is to think of the best way to balance that clash, because it is not good for the child either to alienate him/ her from the other culture to which him/her belongs (at school for example), apart from that of their families(as we´ve seen each person is part of many different cultures at the same time)A way to do this would start from thinking of the differences between them and how to go about the presentation of the two cultures, without excluding one another. I don´t know exaclty how it would be, I think it completely depends on the case.
I don´t know if I made myself clear, did I? jajajaa

Lu

Hi everybody!

I think it's inevitable for teachers to avoid a culture clash. They are two different worlds and both are part of the student's reality. So in my opinion, what school or teachers should do is not to break up with students' culture but try to sympathize with and help students to accept and deal with both cultures.

I'm sorry people, I wanted to say empathize with instead o sympathize with.
