I believe the main aim of the book is very important when teaching youngsters. The book doesn’t attempt to give a long list of moral answers to everyday problems but to stimulate young learners to develop critical thinking; not to take everything that comes from the outside world for granted and to help them to take positions and build up their identity. This can be related to what we were discussing on previous lessons as regards thinking differently. If we always do and believe what we are told to; or never ask ourselves why should I think this or that or behave this way? Is this what I really believe?, we will never be free, we will be like entities that can be easily controlled.
I particularly like the way the book is written and the role the writer takes as a father talking to his son, who wants to transmit all what he has learnt, reflect and experience throughout his life advising him to trust himself and at the same time, learn from his son too, so that enrich each other’s lives.

Nice to read your first post, Lucía!
You say you believe this book maybe important when teaching youngsters... Do you believe adults need to learn Ethics too, or is it something we do only during our childhood?
I also meant to ask you: as a teacher(-to-be), do you think your role also involves teaching Ethics to your students, or is this a task just for parents?
Way to go!
Gladys
PS: loved the image you've embedded!!!
Hi Gladys,
I believe teaching Ethics to young people is very important because there is the key period of their life when their values and beliefs are built. This does not mean that adults don´t need to learn Ethics at all, on the contrary. But I´d stressed the importance of teaching it to youngsters because the book is clearly directed to them.
As a teacher to be I think teaching Ethics is a task to be discussed at home as well as in the classroom. The ideal thing would be for teachers and parents to work together to try to do our best for the students.
Bye bye,
Lu
Hi Lucia!
I totally agree with you. Teachers are educators at school, but parents are educators at home.It would be great if teachers and parents could work together! It is part of our job to contribute with the task of teaching ethics to children and this book seems to be a good tool. I really enjoy reading it myself!!! Let's keep on reading!
I certainly agree with you both, Lu and Adri! The importance of the school-home alliance can never be overstressed, right?
Can you think of other educators that contribute to each individuals' ethics? Or is it just the job of the individual, their parents and teachers?
All the best,
Gladys
I don´t know if you refer to this kind of educator but... I think television and the media in general together with the publicity are also the children´s "educators", they learn a lot from them, including moral values... I post something related to this in my post called: Wake up Neo.
XXX,
Lu
I absolutely agree with you that the media can be powerful educators, Lu... A lot could be said about their responsibilities then...
Fondly,
Gladys
