Clash

This play deals with the conflicts that appeared after Rita and Frank meet. They both come from completely different backgrounds and social status. They move around different social circles, Rita chats with colleagues at the hairdresser’s while Frank delivers Literature lessons at university. This is why at the beginning of the play Rita cannot understand why she cannot write her opinions directly in her essays. She is very clever. Yet, she also needs to learn how to adapt her linguistic forms according to the context in which we are immersed. Otherwise, she would not pass the exams. So Rita, as well as Frank, has to adapt to her new surroundings. For all this, Educating Rita can be considered a play about the clash of class and culture. But what I believe is that this clash turns out to be positive and enriching for both of them.

When cultures meet, conflict is bound to arise, Lu. Now, if school was created precisely to promote that (the meeting of cultures, I meet), then school should also prepare learners to deal with the conflict this brings about, right?

Frank and Rita have shown us this is possible indeed. Now, paraphrasing Mr Keating (remember "Dead Poet's Society"), who was in turn quoting Byron, I think: "... the play goes on, and I may contribute a verse... What will your line be"?

Peace,
Gladys

PS: the quote may be inexact (have to rush to school now, and can't check!), but the spirit is intact :-P!

Hello,
I absolutely agree. What you said about the role of schools in this situations is what happened with Frank and Rita.Frank helped her to adapt, to deal with the conflicts she would have encountered at exams if she hadn't learnt how to write compositions for example. But it is true that we are all different and that rules and regulations can be changed, so if we think something should be different, we must try to change it in the best way possible without hurting or affecting other people's lives.
I'll keep on thinking about this...

Hugs,
Lu
