Reciprocity

After Rita’s process of change, Frank feels she is leaving him behind, that she doesn’t need him anymore. Throughout Rita’s course of study, Frank developed strong feelings towards her and vice versa. He’s got used to her being around, consulting him about recognised authors, chatting about her feelings and conflicts with her family and job. He felt that somebody needed him, and he was more than happy to do so. But now that Rita’s grown more independent of his guidance, he feels miserable and alone. He realised that the need for guidance was reciprocal.

Yes Lu, There is something really strong within the relationship between Rita and Frank. They need each other. They enjoyed spending most of the time together.
See you!

I agree with you Frank has been learning from Rita, Lu, and that is what has made him so enthusiastic about this relationship... Now, I'm not that sure his current concern is exclusively due to his realising Rita's thinking of "leaving" him... Isn't something else at stake, something that to Frank meant a reason to work for?

Think about it: what is it that Frank has been longing to achieve? How was Rita helping him get there, and why is it all at risk now? No wonder Frank is so upset, I think: his life mission seems to be endangered!

Am I too "mysterious", or by now you know what I have in mind? ;-)

Love,
Gladys

Hello teacher,
What I suspect you're thinking of is that Frank's dream was to write poetry again, and as Rita was also a teacher for him, she encouraged him to set out to write. So now he is afraid of losing her support and enthuisiasm.
I'm not sure if this is the reason Frank meant a reason to work for or his life mission, but I do believe this is an aspect of his life in which Rita has been helping him.
Another thing I was thinking of after you posed this question to me was that Frank always told Rita to be herself and praised her uniqueness, and now he saw that she was not taking advantage of this but absorbing other's people opinions and attitudes rather than forming her own's. So in the end he would not help her be wise and unique but like song has it: "...another brick in the wall..."
